| Bats: Geren Named Mets’ New Bench Coach | |
October 14, 2011, 7:16 pm By ANDREW KEH The Mets took another step in revamping their coaching staff on Friday by naming Bob Geren, the former manager of the Oakland Athletics, as their bench coach for the 2012 season. Geren was one of two candidates interviewed this week for the position, which became vacant after the Mets removed Ken Oberkfell last week. Jim Riggleman, who resigned as manager of the Washington Nationals midway through the 2011 season, was also interviewed. The Mets had indicated they were looking for a bench coach with experience as a major league manager. Geren, 50, was fired by the Athletics in June after more than four seasons as their manager. “Bob Geren’s experience as a former manager and bench coach will be a great fit for us,” Mets Manager Terry Collins said in a statement. “Adding a former major league catcher like Bob to our staff will be ideal.” Geren made his major league debut as a player for the Yankees in 1988, and played five seasons in the majors as a catcher.

| Rich Harden Will Not Be Traded | |
Read More: Rich Harden (P – OAK), Oakland Athletics, Texas Rangers, Cleveland Indians, New York Yankees, Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Angels After nearing trading Rich Harden to the Boston Red Sox last month, the Oakland Athletics could be looking to move their veteran starting pitcher to a different AL East foe — the New York Yankees. A trade would not be easy, though. WEEI Radio’s blog has the story:
Harden has pitched well since the trade deadline and that would be the cause of the Yankees recent interest, though a pitcher with his history of injuries can go down at any time. A potential deal could become complicated because Harden would have to pass through waivers in order for the Yankees to obtain him. Would playoff contenders such as the Rangers, Red Sox, Tigers, Indians and Angels let Harden get through? Maybe, maybe not. As far as a return would go for the A’s, it would be minimal. In deals after the trade deadline, most of them would include a player-to-be-named-later or two, along with cash considerations. No major prospects would be made in a move to acquire a guy for a month. For more Athletics coverage be sure to check out Athletics Nation. If you’re a Yankees fan, the good guys at Pinstripe Alley will keep you updated. UPDATE — 1pm The Yankees may have been interested in Harden, but it was the Cleveland Indians who placed the claim on him. After this, Oakland pulled him from waivers. Buster Olney tweeted the info:
