BALTIMORE- The Orioles on Tuesday announced that they have acquired OF JAI MILLER from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for cash considerations and have also traded INF BRANDON SNYDER to the Texas Rangers in exchange for cash considerations.

Miller, 26, batted .276/.368/.588 with 32 home runs, 88 RBI and 16 stolen bases without being caught in 110 games for Triple-A Sacramento in 2011. He also appeared in seven games for the A’s, going 3-for-12 with a home run.

Miller has batted .271/.351/.516 with 85 home runs and 253 RBI in 423 games at the Triple-A level in the last four seasons. His major league time also includes 20 games with the Kansas City Royals in 2010, when he batted .236/.300/.345. He made his major league debut in 2008 with the Marlins.

“Jai Miller has the power, speed, base stealing skills and good athletic ability to be an asset in our outfield as he competes for a spot on our ballclub this spring,” said Orioles Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations DAN DUQUETTE.

Snyder, 25, batted .261/.312/.406 in 114 games with Triple-A Norfolk in 2011. He also appeared in six games for the Orioles, going 3-for-13.

The Orioles 40-man roster remains full with these moves.

OAKLAND, Calif. — Brandon Allen has had a pretty good couple of days since making his AL debut.

						OAKLAND, Calif. —

Brandon Allen has had a pretty good couple of days since making his AL debut. The Oakland Athletics haven’t benefited from them yet.

Allen got three hits for the second straight day but the Athletics failed to hold a lead and fell to the Baltimore Orioles 6-2 on Monday night, their fourth straight loss.

David DeJesus doubled home a run and scored on Cliff Pennington’s single for the A’s, who have dropped four straight.

“It’s part of the game,” Allen said. “We got some good at-bats but their pitcher seemed to bear down when he felt a threat. Unfortunately they got the key hits and we didn’t.”

The Orioles managed only two hits off Oakland left-hander Gio Gonzalez (9-11) through the first six innings before scoring four times in the seventh.

“It was a positive outing,” said Gonzalez, who lost his fifth straight start. “I took a stride forward. My luck is turning a little bit and I just want to stay positive.”

Matt Wieters and Mark Reynolds both homered to help the Orioles begin a 10-game road trip with a victory following a 3-7 homestand.

Robert Andino hit a go-ahead bases-loaded double in the seventh inning and Josh Bell added a two-run single

Adam Jones and Vladimir Guerrero both singled before Gonzalez walked Wieters to load the bases. After a strikeout, Andino greeted reliever Fautino De Los Santos with a deep double over the head of center fielder Coco Crisp to drive in Jones and Guerrero.

Bell, batting only .143 coming into the game, followed with a bouncing single up the middle. Wieters and Andino both scored easily to make it 5-2.

“The seventh inning was a problem,” A’s manager Bob Melvin. “Based on how he pitched leading up to that it looks like Gio is righting the ship.”

It’s only Baltimore’s fourth win in its last 18 games on the road. The Orioles also won for just the second time in 14 games at the Oakland Coliseum since the start of the 2008 season.

Tommy Hunter (2-2) allowed two runs over 6 2-3 innings to earn his first win with Baltimore. The right-hander, who struck out three and walked one, had been winless in two starts since being acquired in a trade from Texas on July 30.

He also got help from the Orioles defense, which turned a double play in the second inning. Wieters also threw out Jemile Weeks trying to steal, the 28th runner the Baltimore catcher has caught this season.

Hunter allowed 10 hits and improved to 5-0 in six career starts against the A’s.

Oakland, outscored 23-8 while getting swept in a three-game series by Texas over the weekend, lost for the sixth time in seven games and fell a season-low 15 games under .500.

Gonzalez gave up four runs and four hits while walking three to raise his majors-leading total to 72.

The A’s strung together four consecutive hits in the bottom of the inning to go in front.

Josh Willingham singled and scored on DeJesus’ double to left center. Allen followed with a base hit before Cliff Pennington’s RBI single gave Oakland a 2-1 lead.

It stayed that way until Baltimore scored four times in the seventh.

Reynolds, who had been in a 1 for 28 slump with 14 strikeouts, homered off Trystan Magnuson in the ninth.

Notes: The A’s set an Oakland record with their 92nd consecutive game with two home runs or fewer. … A’s manager Bob Melvin expects Conor Jackson to be out a few days after the first baseman woke up with a sore neck. … Baltimore IF Chris Davis was not in the starting lineup in order to rest a sore shoulder. … Baltimore 3B Josh Bell underwent a CAT scan on his left side which proved negative. … LHP Brian Matusz (1-4) is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Norfolk to start for Baltimore on Tuesday night. Matusz had a 0.56 ERA in his last two starts in the minors. RHP Guillermo Moscoso (5-6) will go for the Athletics.

Hunter allowed 10 hits and improved to 5-0 in six career starts against the A’s.

Michael Gonzalez pitched 1 1-3 innings and Kevin Gregg worked the ninth.

Oakland, outscored 23-8 while getting swept in a three-game series by Texas over the weekend, lost for the sixth time in seven games and fell a season-low 15 games under .500.

Gonzalez took his fifth straight loss, giving up four runs and four hits while walking three to raise his majors-leading total to 72.

Wieter’s hit a 1-2 pitch from Gonzalez off the green cement facing high above the wall in center field with two outs in the second. The home run was Wieter’s 11th of the season and first since July 17.

Reynolds, who had been mired in a 1-for-28 slump with 14 strikeouts, homered off Trystan Magnuson in the ninth.

Notes: The A’s set an Oakland record with their 92nd consecutive game with two home runs or fewer. … A’s manager Bob Melvin expects Conor Jackson to be out a few days after the first baseman woke up with a sore neck. … Baltimore INF Chris Davis was not in the starting lineup in order to rest a sore shoulder. … 3B Josh Bell underwent a CAT scan on his left side which proved negative. … LHP Brian Matusz (1-4) is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Norfolk to start for Baltimore on Tuesday night. Matusz, who carried a 0.56 ERA in his last two starts in the minors, is 2-2 lifetime against Oakland. RHP Guillermo Moscoso (5-6) will go for the Athletics.

TORONTO — Conor Jackson drove in three runs, Hideki Matsui had four hits and the Oakland Athletics beat the Toronto Blue Jays 10-3 on Thursday.

Oakland failed to hit a home run for the first time in nine games but still finished with its most runs since scoring 13 against Tampa Bay on July 27. Oakland’s season-high is 14 runs, set May 17 against the Angels.

Matsui had a 15-game hitting streak snapped Tuesday and was hitless in 10 at bats before hitting an RBI single in the third. He grounded out in the fourth but singled again in the sixth, seventh and ninth to finish 4 for 6. Matsui, who was hitting .209 at the All Star break, has raised his average to .268.

Oakland right-hander Guillermo Moscoso (5-6) allowed two runs, one earned, in six innings to earn the win. He walked two and struck out six.

Fautino De Los Santos and Brian Fuentes each worked one inning before Craig Breslow finished for the A’s.

J.P. Arencibia hit his 19th home run for Toronto, a solo drive to center in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough for the Blue Jays. Full Story

       Padres 3, Mets 2

NEW YORK — Cameron Maybin homered and stole two bases before scoring the tiebreaking run on an error by substitute shortstop Ruben Tejada, rallying the San Diego Padres past the New York Mets for a split of their four-game series.

Heath Bell pitched a perfect ninth and the last-place Padres improved to 5-2 on a 10-game road trip that takes them to Cincinnati this weekend.

Lucas Duda hit a two-run double for the Mets, who finished 3-6 on a disappointing homestand. New York has lost eight of 11 overall.

With the Mets short on available relievers, Jonathon Niese (11-9) matched his career high with 122 pitches.

       Reds 2, Rockies 1

CINCINNATI — Johnny Cueto and two relievers made a pair of first-inning runs stand up and the Cincinnati Reds salvaged a split of their four-game series against the Colorado Rockies.

Cueto, hampered by an upset stomach while pitching a season-low 3 2/3 innings in his last start at Wrigley Field, bounced back to throw three-hit ball for seven shutout innings. He took over the NL ERA lead, lowering his mark from 2.06 to 1.94.

Cueto (8-5) struck out a season-high nine, including Carlos Gonzalez with the bases loaded to end the fifth inning, walked two and hit a batter.

He missed the first month of the season with soreness in his upper right arm, qualified for the ERA lead with this outing.

       White Sox 6, Orioles 3

BALTIMORE — Mark Buehrle pitched eight innings to earn his 10th win, Alexei Ramirez homered in a four-run first inning, and the Chicago White Sox cruised past the Baltimore Orioles.

Juan Pierre had three hits and two RBI for the White Sox, who scored four runs before making an out. Chicago took three of four from the Orioles to complete a 6-1 road trip.

Buehrle (10-5) gave up three runs and six hits, struck out six and walked none. The left-hander has allowed three runs or fewer in 18 straight starts, matching the club record set by Frank Smith in 1909, according to research by the Elias Sports Bureau.

Buehrle’s run of 11 straight seasons with at least 10 wins is a franchise record.

BALTIMORE – Rookie Zach Britton took a four-hitter into the seventh inning, Mark Reynolds homered, and the Baltimore Orioles beat the skidding Oakland Athletics 3-2 on Wednesday night for a three-game sweep.

It was the ninth consecutive loss for the Athletics, their longest skid since a 10-game run in 2008. Oakland scored only four runs in the series and never held a lead.

A’s second baseman Jemile Weeks went 2 for 3 and scored both Oakland runs. The former first-round draft pick went hitless in his major league debut Tuesday night.

J.J. Hardy drove in a run for the Orioles, who have won four of five. It was their first three-game sweep of the A’s in Baltimore since July 21-23, 1998.

Britton (6-4) allowed four hits and two walks in 6 1-3 innings. The left-hander, who tied his career high with six strikeouts, was 0-3 in six starts since May 1.

Jim Johnson gave up an unearned run in 1 2-3 innings and Kevin Gregg worked a perfect ninth for his 12th save.

Baltimore got all its runs in the fifth inning against Josh Outman (1-1). Vladimir Guerrero hit a leadoff single, advanced on a two-out wild pitch and scored on a single by Hardy. Reynolds followed with his 10th home run.

Oakland ended a string of 19 straight scoreless innings in the sixth. After singles by Weeks and Coco Crisp put runners at the corners with no outs, Daric Barton hit into a 4-6-3 double play.

The A’s closed to 3-2 in the eighth. Left fielder Nolan Reimold misjudged a line drive by Weeks for a three-base error and Crisp followed with a sacrifice fly.

The A’s made two exceptional fielding plays in the early going. Crisp tracked down a liner to deep center by Guerrero, and shortstop Cliff Pennington dived deep in the hole to snare a grounder before rising to his feet and throwing out Hardy.

Backed with that kind of defensive support and aided by a double play, Outman faced the minimum 12 batters through four innings.

But Baltimore broke open the scoreless duel in the fifth.

Outman allowed three runs and five hits in six innings. Oakland starters are 0-8 with a 6.88 ERA during the nine-game losing streak.

NOTES: The Orioles will put 1B Derrek Lee on the bereavement list Thursday so he can attend his grandfather’s funeral in California. Baltimore is off Thursday, but Lee is expected to miss the entire three-game series against Tampa Bay that begins Friday night. … Oakland’s 14-24 record in night games is worst in the AL. … Total attendance for the series was a meager 35,968. … Oakland INF Andy LaRoche, who was designated for assignment on Sunday, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Sacramento. … Johnson has allowed only two earned runs in his last 16 appearances (21 IP).

That’s all for today.

BALTIMORE – The Oakland Athletics couldn’t get more than one hit in any inning against Baltimore, and many of their hard-hit balls went directly into the glove of one of the Orioles.

The result was a hauntingly familiar 4-0 defeat Tuesday night that extended the A’s losing streak to a season-high eight games.

“It seems like it’s been happening like that all year, especially the last couple of weeks,” Oakland center fielder Ryan Sweeney lamented. “We’re having good at bats but can’t put anything together and hit it right at somebody.”

Chris Jakubauskas pitched five innings of three-hit ball and the Orioles hit three solo homers to move into position to complete a three-game sweep Wednesday. Baltimore had lost eight straight series to Oakland since July 2007.

Jakubauskas (1-0) came into the game with a 6.39 ERA over five appearances, all in relief. He was pressed into duty because the Orioles are carrying only four starters and were playing for a fifth straight day.

Operating against Oakland’s anemic offense, Jakubauskas looked like the ace of the Baltimore staff. The A’s, who have averaged three runs per game while batting .217 during their eight-game skid, absorbed their seventh shutout loss of the season.

“We didn’t hit the ball extremely well, but when we did it was definitely right at somebody,” Oakland manager Bob Geren said. “They had some homers and we couldn’t link any hits together. Made plays defensively, but nothing on the scoreboard.”

The last time Jakubauskas started a game was on April 24, 2010, with the Pittsburgh Pirates. In that game, the right-hander was struck in the head by a liner off the bat of Lance Berkman in the first inning and carted off the field.

Against Oakland, Jakubauskas had a two-hit shutout in the fifth inning when Cliff Pennington smacked a line drive that hit the pitcher above his left ankle.

“There were some choice words that went through my mind after it happened, but I try to keep those as quiet as I could,” Jakubauskas said. “It was more of just, ‘I can’t believe this. Really? Again I get hit?’”

After consulting with trainer Richie Bancells and manager Buck Showalter, Jakubauskas took a few warmup tosses and finished his outing by retiring Jemile Weeks for the third out.

It was enough to get him his first win in the majors since 2009 with Seattle.

J.J. Hardy and Luke Scott connected against Guillermo Moscoso (2-2), and Adam Jones made it 3-0 in the sixth with a drive off Michael Wuertz. Mark Reynolds added an RBI double in the seventh against Craig Breslow.

The eight-game slide is Oakland’s longest since an identical skid from Sept. 27, 2009, to April 5, 2010. The A’s are 5-15 since May 17.

Making his major league debut, Weeks went 0 for 4 in the leadoff spot. Weeks, the 12th overall pick in the 2008 draft, had his contract purchased from Triple-A Sacramento before the game. The second baseman is the younger brother of Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks.

After Jakubauskas left, Clay Rapada retired two batters in the sixth, Jeremy Accardo worked 2 1-3 innings and Koji Uehara got the final three outs to complete the five-hitter.

Batting at the top of the order for the first time this season, Hardy hit his first career leadoff homer, a drive to left that provided Baltimore with a lead it would not relinquish.

Scott hit his seventh homer of the season — the first since May 3 — leading off the fifth. The drive traveled an estimated 418 feet and landed on Eutaw Street beyond the 25-foot wall in right field.

Moscoso allowed two runs and five hits in five innings. Coming into the game, he had not given up a home run this season over 14 innings.

“I missed two pitches and I paid for it,” he said.

“He threw great tonight,” Sweeney said. “We just didn’t score any runs for him.”

Notes: The A’s placed LHP Brett Anderson (sore elbow) and 2B Mark Ellis (strained right hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list. … Actor Ed Harris threw out the ceremonial first pitch. … Eight of Baltimore’s last 10 home runs have been solo shots.

There is the quick update of the day.

BALTIMORE (AP) — The Oakland Athletics placed left-hander Brett Anderson and second baseman Mark Ellis on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday.

Anderson has a sore left elbow and Ellis strained his right hamstring Monday night against Baltimore. With Ellis out, the A’s selected the contract of former top draft choice Jemile Weeks from Triple-A Sacramento.

Weeks, the 12th overall pick in the 2008 draft, was poised to make his major league debut Tuesday night against the Orioles as Oakland’s leadoff hitter and second baseman.

“I’m not sure what it’s going to be like up here,” Weeks said before batting practice. “Got a little bit of nerves in me right now, but that’s expected. Just hope to be out there and be able to calm down a little bit before the game starts.”

Weeks said he expected his mother, father, sister and agent to be in attendance.

The make room for Weeks on the 40-man roster, Oakland moved pitcher Dallas Braden from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL.

The A’s also recalled left-hander Bobby Cramer from Sacramento. It’s his third stint with Oakland this season.

“It’s just part of baseball. It’s a long season,” Cramer said.

Anderson is 3-6 with a 4.00 ERA and was coming off successive poor starts against the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. He was sent home to Oakland on Monday and is scheduled to see the team orthopedist this week.

Ellis was batting .213 with one homer and 15 RBIs in 58 games. He missed a month last year with an injured left hamstring, but said this injury was not as serious.

“This is not even close to being the same thing,” Ellis said, adding that he expected to return after 15 days.

Adam Rosales would have preferred to celebrate his return from the disabled list with a victory.

Instead, he had to settle for personal glory during an otherwise dreary night for the Oakland Athletics.

Rosales homered in his long-awaited first game of the year, but that was the extent of Oakland’s offense Monday night in a 4-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles that extended the A’s skid to a season-high seven games.

Rosales had been sidelined since spring training with a fractured right foot. He came off the 60-day DL on Monday, promptly joined the starting lineup at third base and hit a two-run shot to bring Oakland to 4-2 in the fourth inning.

“It was good to get back and try to help the momentum a little bit,” he said. “I was a little nervous, but it felt good to go all nine. There was a lot of adrenaline to hit a ball like that. It was exciting.”

Rosales contributed on defense, too — no small accomplishment for a team that started the day with 43 errors, second-most in the AL.

“Obviously that homer was exciting. It got us back in the game,” manager Bob Geren said. “He also made a great play at third. I like the energy he brings and the talent also. Very nice impact the first game. It was a losing cause but he was a highlight reel.”

Brian Matusz and three relievers combined on a seven-hitter to help Baltimore beat Oakland for only the fifth time in the last 25 meetings.

Matusz (1-0) allowed two runs and seven hits in 5 1-3 innings in his second start of the season. He spent the first two months on the DL with a strained left oblique muscle.

The 24-year-old was lifted in the sixth after giving up successive one-out singles to Kurt Suzuki and pinch-hitter Scott Sizemore, who was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento hours earlier. Jim Johnson entered and got Rosales to bounce into a 1-6-3 double play.

Johnson retired the side in order in the seventh, Koji Uehara worked a perfect eighth and Kevin Gregg got three straight outs for his 11th save.

“It’s a lot of fun playing like that,” said Matusz, who has won seven straight decisions dating back to last August.

Matt Wieters had two hits, an RBI and scored a run for the Orioles, who took a 4-0 lead after two innings against Gio Gonzalez (5-4).

Gonzalez gave up four runs, three earned, and nine hits in seven innings. He permitted only three hits over his last five innings.

“Once I started getting in the groove I started attacking the zone,” Gonzalez said. “It’s just one of those situations — they’re aggressive, they’re swinging the bats, they just got a bunch of hits.”

It all added up to the 15th loss in 19 games for the A’s, who fell a season-worst seven games under .500 (27-34).

“Each one it’s something different,” Geren said of the slide. “The majority were well-pitched games. Tonight we got two runs. It’s a combination — we haven’t played well the past week, the total package. We have to play better.”

The Orioles took a 1-0 lead with an unearned first-inning run. After shortstop Cliff Pennington muffed a potential double-play grounder, Vladimir Guerrero hit a two-out RBI single.

Baltimore made it 4-0 in the second. Derrek Lee led off with a single, stole second and continued to third on an overthrow by Suzuki. Wieters followed with an RBI single, J.J. Hardy singled, and both moved up on a wild pitch before Nolan Reimold hit a sacrifice fly and Nick Markakis singled in a run.

The A’s two errors gave them 45 for the season. Oakland started the day with the second-most errors in the AL, two behind Texas.

Rosales connected in the fourth with a man on. It was his first home run since July 18, 2010, at Kansas City.

NOTES: Oakland 2B Mark Ellis left in the sixth inning with a right hamstring strain. … To make room for Rosales and Sizemore on the 25-man roster, the A’s optioned third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff and right-hander Fautino De Los Santos to Sacramento. … Markakis has hit in 160 consecutive series, the longest active streak in the majors.

Gotta run!.

OAKLAND, Calif.

OAKLAND, Calif. – Josh Willingham hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the fifth inning, Daric Barton added an insurance run in the sixth and the Oakland Athletics beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-4 on Sunday to complete their first three-game sweep this season.

Kevin Kouzmanoff added two hits for Oakland, which extended its longest winning streak this season to four games. The A’s also continued their home dominance of the Orioles with their 12th win in 13 tries at the Coliseum.

Oakland got a boost from two-time All-Star closer Andrew Bailey, who made his season debut after being sidelined with a strained right forearm. He pitched a scoreless seventh.

Vladimir Guerrero singled in the eighth to extend his hitting streak to 14 games, but the Orioles couldn’t score against four Oakland relievers and dropped their third straight on the road after a five-game winning streak at home.

Guillermo Moscoso (2-0) gave up five hits with two walks to earn his second straight win after being called up from the minors on May 24 to replace injured starter Tyson Ross.

Craig Breslow, Bailey and Grant Balfour each pitched one scoreless inning and Brian Fuentes worked the ninth for his 11th save in 13 tries.

Willingham’s second homer in three days capped a four-run fifth and gave the A’s a 5-4 lead. It’s only the fourth three-run shot of the season for Oakland, which has the third-fewest home runs (30) in the majors.

Baltimore led 4-1 after loading the bases against Moscoso in the top of the inning then scoring four runs with only one hit.

Felix Pie had an RBI single that A’s center fielder Coco Crisp appeared to make a diving catch on before the ball popped out of his glove after hitting the ground. Nolan Reimold, pushed into action when center fielder Adam Jones left with a sore shoulder, then drew a bases-loaded walk and Nick Markakis and Guerrero added run-scoring groundouts.

The loss of Jones left the Orioles without their leading run producer.

That’s significant for a team that has struggled to score on this road trip. After getting four runs against Moscoso, Baltimore managed only two baserunners over the final four innings.

It was a frustrating weekend all around for the Orioles, who were held to 19 hits and grounded into seven double plays during the series.

The A’s got a lift from Bailey, who had been on the DL since March 30. The 2009 AL Rookie of the Year retired all three batters he faced as Oakland tries to ease him back into the mix.

“He’s had enough rehab assignments and he feels like he’s ready,” Oakland manager Bob Geren said before the game. “It makes a good bullpen even better.”

Oakland gave Bailey a 6-4 lead to work with after chasing Baltimore starter Zach Britton in the sixth. Barton hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Mark Ellis after the Orioles intentionally walked Crisp to load the bases.

Britton (5-3) was tagged for career highs of six runs and 10 hits. The left-hander, who was attempting to tie Jake Arrieta for the team lead in wins, walked three and struck out three.

Willingham singled to drive in Barton in the first with the A’s first run. In 16 career games against the Orioles, Willingham is batting .400 with four home runs and 12 RBIs.

NOTES: Baltimore sent struggling RHP Brad Bergesen to Triple-A Norfolk and called up LHP Pedro Viola from Double-A Bowie. Bergesen (1-6) took the loss in Saturday’s game. … To make room for Bailey the A’s optioned LHP Bobby Cramer to Triple-A Sacramento. Cramer was called up Friday when Oakland traded David Purcey to Detroit but did not pitch against Baltimore.

The Oakland Athletics look to get one game closer to .500 as they host the Baltimore Orioles in the second game of a three-game series. The A’s will send out Josh Outman to make his second major league start since Tommy John surgery. He will square off with Brad Bergesen. Outman had some control issues but kept the A’s in the game, even though their offense couldn’t quite pull it out.

The A’s offense remains an enigma wrapped in a riddle. They received timely hits from Ryan Sweeney and Josh Willingham in Friday’s 6-2 victory over the Orioles. Sweeney is hitting as well as anybody on the A’s and yet he still finds himself getting fairly limited playing time. One could make the argument that he is hitting well because the A’s are using him in the proper manner. Or you could argue the A’s should be playing him a lot more frequently to benefit from his hot bat. Take it however you want.

In other news, Kevin Kouzmanoff finds himself back in the lineup after a week off with a strained groin. Andy LaRoche did not really do enough to secure more playing time, so manager Bob Geren continues to flip-flop the two of them at third base. The black hole that is third base continues.

(Sports Network) – The Oakland Athletics try to continue their recent mastery
of the Baltimore Orioles this evening when the two teams resume a three-game
series at the Coliseum.

Oakland won seven of its 10 matchups with the Orioles last season and is 18-4
in the series since the start of the 2008 campaign with 10 of those wins
coming in its home ballpark.

That trend continued in Friday’s opener, as Ryan Sweeney singled in a run to
spark a three- run sixth inning to give Oakland a 6-2 victory.

Brad Ziegler (1-0) was given the win as he pitched two scoreless innings in
relief of starter Gio Gonzalez. Gonzalez went five-plus innings, allowing two
runs — one earned — on five hits and five walks with seven strikeouts in the
Athletics’ third win in their last four games.

Alfredo Simon (1-1) took the loss when he allowed three runs in two innings of
relief. Starter Chris Tillman allowed two runs — one earned — on six hits
and three walks in 4 1/3 innings as Baltimore had its five-game win streak
stopped.

“I’m disappointed, but I have to look forward,” Tillman said of his short
outing. “We’re headed in the right direction.”

Getting the call for the O’s this evening will be righty Brad Bergesen, who
hasn’t pitched since getting torched by the New York Yankees on May 19.
Bergesen gave up eight runs and five hits in just 3 1/3 innings of that one,
as he fell to 1-5 on the year to go along with a 5.64 ERA.

He did not get a decision in his only other start against the A’s, but
surrendered four runs in seven innings of that outing.

Oakland, meanwhile, will counter with lefty Josh Outman, who will be making
his second start after missing all of last season recovering from Tommy John
surgery. Outman, filling in for the injured Brandon McCarthy and Tyson Ross,
looked good in his initial outing, holding the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
to a run and five hits in seven innings, but did not factor in the decision of
his team’s 4-1 loss.

“It was quite an outing for his first time out,” manager Bob Geren said. “When
you lose a couple starters and have a guy come up and step up like that, that
was quite impressive. It was just unfortunate we couldn’t get runs for him.
One run, you have to be absolutely perfect as a pitcher.”

This will be his first-ever appearance against the Orioles.
