Oct 21, 2011 – After one season with the Boston Red Sox, pitching coach Curt Young is leaving to take the same position with the Oakland Athletics according to Jon Morosi of Fox Sports.

After the Red Sox and Terry Francona parted ways, there was speculation that Young — whose pitching staff struggled as the Red Sox lost a nine-game September lead to miss the playoffs — might be the next to go even with one year remaining on his contract. Now we know for sure as he’s been re-signed by the Athletics–an organization Young has been connected to for 27 years.

Young was taken by Oakland as a player in the fourth round of the 1982 draft. He spent 12 years in the organization as a player, eight as a Minor League coach, and has already spent seven as a Major League pitching coach, bringing up a number of impressive young pitchers with the team. Now, after just one year away, he’ll be back for an eighth.

Ricky Romero pitched as calmly with runners in scoring position as he did with the bases empty.

Not even pitching in front of his father and siblings was enough to rattle the Toronto left-hander, who is in the middle of the finest stretch of his career.

Romero pitched a three-hitter to extend his career-high winning streak to five games and the Blue Jays, getting a big night from Colby Rasmus, beat the Oakland Athletics 7-0 on Tuesday night.

“He pitched like he’s been on the run for the last five or six outings,” Toronto manager John Farrell said. “He was down in the strike zone, he was efficient. When he gets in that rhythm he doesn’t try to do anything more than what the situation’s calling for.”

Romero (12-9) struck out six and walked two while recording his second shutout this season and third of his career. He had to pitch out of a series of jams early then retired the final 13 batters he faced.

He labored at times but worked out of trouble to remain unbeaten in five starts against Oakland.

“Everything feels good right now,” Romero said. “I’m attacking the zone, being consistent with my pitches and not panicking in situations like I had in those first few innings. I feel in control right now.”

Romero pitched out of a two-on, no-out jam in the second then wriggled out of trouble again after Oakland loaded the bases in the third by getting hot-hitting Brandon Allen to foul out to first. Allen, called up from the minors on Saturday, was in a 9-for-16 stretch before popping out.

Romero, who shut out the St. Louis Cardinals on four hits June 6, settled down after that and allowed only one hit the rest of the way. He improved to 4-0 in five career starts against the A’s.

“What he’s done is slow the game down mentally,” Farrell said. “He’s not rushed into any pitches … and in key spots he’s made some big pitches.”

Rasmus homered and scored three times for the Blue Jays. Edwin Encarnacion and Brett Lawrie had RBI singles while Jose Bautista doubled and scored in the fourth when Toronto scored three times off Oakland starter Trevor Cahill to break the game open.

Cahill (9-12) allowed seven runs and nine hits over 5 1-3 innings and lost for the seventh time in his last 10 starts. Since beginning the season 6-0, the right-hander is 3-12 with a 5.30 ERA.

“We’ve had inconsistencies across the board at times so when a guy like him has some struggles, everybody feels it,” Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. “He’s not the only one and it’s not like he’s all the sudden lost his stuff. He’s just having a difficult time being consistent.”

Rasmus, acquired from St. Louis as part of an eight-player trade on July 27, doubled and scored in the second then hit a towering two-run drive off Cahill in the fourth. The home run, Rasmus’ third with Toronto and 14th overall, caromed off a sign hanging from the second deck in right field and gave Toronto a 4-0 lead.

He also singled leading off the sixth for his first three-hit game since the trade.

Before getting to Cahill, Rasmus had been mired in a 16-for-71 funk (.225) with his new club.

Encarnacion, meanwhile, remained one of the hottest hitters in the American League. The Blue Jays designated hitter singled in Bautista in the fourth and scored on Rasmus’ home run. He has reached safely in 17 consecutive games.

Adam Lind added an RBI single off Cahill in the fifth and J.P. Arencibia drove in two runs in the sixth to chase the Oakland right-hander, who is in the worst slump of his career.

The A’s fell to 2-5 on their homestand.

Read More: twins baseball, minnesota twins baseball, athletics baseball, oakland athletics baseball, twins at athletics, twins vs athletics, twins athletics preview, Brandon McCarthy (P – OAK), Carl Pavano (P – MIN), Nick Blackburn (P – MIN), Oakland Athletics, Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Twins at Oakland Athletics, Jul 31, 2011 3:05 PM CDT

It seems appropriate as of late that the Oakland Athletics play their home games at the Overstock.com Coliseum. . .because, lately, they really have been all about the “O.”

The Athletics, as a team, are hitting .315 since the All-Star break, and have collected at least eight hits in every game in that stretch. That includes the twelve they racked up on Saturday night in the process of thumping Nick Blackburn and the Minnesota Twins by a final score of 8-3.

In an attempt to win this three-game series, the Twins will send right-hander Carl Pavano (6-7, 4.60 ERA) to the mound. Pavano was blistered in his last start on Tuesday, allowing eight runs on nine hits in just five innings of work against the Texas Rangers, but wound up with a no-decision as the Twins’ furious comeback got them a 9-8 victory. He has faced the Athletics twice this season, and has been pretty successful. On April 8, Pavano worked eight solid innings, allowing just one run on four hits at Target Field in Minnesota’s 2-1 win. On May 18 at the Overstock.com Coliseum, Pavano allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits in seven innings, but got a no-decision in a 4-3 Minnesota victory.

He will be opposed by Oakland right-hander Brandon McCarthy (3-5, 3.52 ERA). McCarthy has only made 14 starts this season, having gone on the disabled list on May 20 with a shoulder injury and not returning until July 4. In his last start, he was great against the Tampa Bay Rays, giving up just one run on six hits in eight innings in Oakland’s 6-1 victory. He has started twice against the Twins this season, and has also fared relatively well. On April 10 at Target Field, he pitched 7.1 solid innings, giving up two runs on nine hits in a 5-3 Athletics win. He also started opposite Pavano in the May 18 match-up mentioned earlier, and also got a no-decision, allowing three runs on nine hits in seven innings.

First pitch from Oakland is scheduled for 3:00 PM Central time. Be sure to keep an eye on Twinkie Town for the party that is the Game Thread, and we’ll be here for the recap when the game is finished.

What do you guys think about this.

The Oakland Athletics send out Guillermo Moscoso to face Zach Britton and the Baltimore Orioles Sunday afternoon at 1:05pm pacific. The A’s will be looking to secure their first series sweep of the season and climb back to the .500 mark for the first time since May 19. The A’s have won four of their last five games and the AL West is bunching up fairly tightly. Oakland remains in last place but is only 1 1/2 games out of first.

The A’s continue their pattern of sitting Hideki Matsui and Ryan Sweeney against left-handed pitchers. I had raised a question about playing Sweeney more often and somebody at Athletics Nation followed up with a similar question. However, as the comments show in the AN FanPost, Sweeney has found the most success against right-handed pitchers. If that’s what it takes to keep Sweeney in the lineup, so be it.

Read More: Kevin Kouzmanoff (3B – OAK), Josh Willingham (LF – OAK), Ryan Sweeney (RF – OAK), Josh Outman (P – OAK), Brad Bergesen (P – BAL), Oakland Athletics

The Oakland Athletics look to get one game closer to .500 as they host the Baltimore Orioles in the second game of a three-game series. The A’s will send out Josh Outman to make his second major league start since Tommy John surgery. He will square off with Brad Bergesen. Outman had some control issues but kept the A’s in the game, even though their offense couldn’t quite pull it out.

The A’s offense remains an enigma wrapped in a riddle. They received timely hits from Ryan Sweeney and Josh Willingham in Friday’s 6-2 victory over the Orioles. Sweeney is hitting as well as anybody on the A’s and yet he still finds himself getting fairly limited playing time. One could make the argument that he is hitting well because the A’s are using him in the proper manner. Or you could argue the A’s should be playing him a lot more frequently to benefit from his hot bat. Take it however you want.

In other news, Kevin Kouzmanoff finds himself back in the lineup after a week off with a strained groin. Andy LaRoche did not really do enough to secure more playing time, so manager Bob Geren continues to flip-flop the two of them at third base. The black hole that is third base continues.

The Oakland Athletics open up an important four-game series with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Monday night as they look to end their current five-game losing streak. The A’s were swept in a two-game set by the Minnesota Twins, and then swept in a three-game series with the San Francisco Giants. Now they go from the frying pan into the fire as they open this Angels series against Jered Weaver on Monday night and follow that up with a matchup against Dan Haren on Tuesday night. Weaver threw a complete game shutout against the A’s on April 25.

The A’s offense has struggled mightily this season and they’re making a couple changes Monday night to try and inject something into the batting order. Since Kevin Kouzmanoff continues to recover from his groin strain, the A’s have an open spot in the order. They’ll start by moving Conor Jackson in to the third base spot and hit him fifth. Jackson has two plate appearances this season as a third baseman, but they’ve come when he was switched to third late in games. This will be his first start at the position as the A’s look to get some kind of offensive charge from what has been an atrocious corner infield spot.

Andy LaRoche remains in the lineup as well, but he’ll be playing second base as Mark Ellis gets a day off. Ellis seemed to be getting hot last week but he has reverted to his general 2011 form and is hitting .200 at this point. The A’s continue to wait for Adam Rosales to get healthy, and in the meantime they are plugging bodies in wherever they can to get some kind of spark.

The 2011 MLB Amateur Draft kicks off on June 6 and the Oakland Athletics hold the 18th pick of the first round, followed by pick 105 in the third round. They do not have a second round pick due to their signing of Tampa Bay free agent Grant Balfour. As the A’s work out their draft board, we thought it would be helpful to take a look at each position on the roster and where the A’s stand at the major league and minor league level. Additionally, we’ll put together a brief rundown of the top draft-eligible prospects at each of those positions.

For today, I thought we’d start out with the second base position. The A’s have a guy on the horizon (Jemile Weeks) just about ready to replace an aging veteran (Mark Ellis), so it will be interesting to see how the A’s decide to address the position. As it currently stands, here is a list of the A’s second baseman throughout the organization. This list includes the starter at the position as well as other guys with significant playing time at the position:

Oakland Athletics: Mark Ellis
Sacramento Rivercats: Jemile Weeks
Midland Rockhounds: Tyler Ladendorf, Jason Christian
Stockton Ports: Conner Crumbliss, Michael Gilmartin
Burlington Bees: Ryan Pineda, Nino Leyja

One name missing from this list is Adrian Cardenas. While Cardenas has spent some time at second base in the past, his fielding leaves a lot to be desired and the team is trying him at other positions at Sacramento this season. Jemile Weeks is the guy expected to replace Mark Ellis in 2012. His primary problem has been health as he has yet to play more than 80 games in a single season. For now he’s playing extremely well at Sacramento with a line of .320/.413/.453 through 128 at bats in 31 games.

A’s director of player development Keith Lieppman spoke about Weeks during a rundown of the A’s farm system:

[Weeks has] been outstanding. I’ve really enjoyed watching him. He had a collision at home plate where he tweaked his hamstring, but other than that, we’re seeing a complete player, with the speed and occasional power, excellent on defense, just really evolving. We never got to see him at 100 percent because of his injuries, so now we know what the scouts saw when he was a No. 1 pick. His production right now, it’s everything you want out of a player. He’s making his way and making a statement right now, and we’re all noticing it.

If Weeks can stay healthy, the A’s will be in excellent shape at second base for the foreseeable future. Of course, given Weeks’ injury history the A’s will need to bring in some more talent. Here is a rundown of some of the top second basemen in the upcoming draft courtesy of MLB Bonus Baby and Keith Law’s Top 100:

Kolten Wong, Hawaii
Ryan Wright, Louisville
Joshua Tobias, Southeast Guilford (NC)
Levi Michael, North Carolina, 2B/SS
Zach MacPhee, Arizona State
Cory Spangenberg, Indrian River State (FL), 2B, SS
