OAKLAND (AP) — The Oakland Athletics have agreed to one-year contracts with infielders Daric Barton and Adam Rosales and catcher Landon Powell.

Also on Monday, the A’s tendered contracts to all the unsigned players on their 40-man roster, including six who remain eligible for arbitration — pitchers Andrew Bailey, Dallas Braden, Joey Devine, Gio Gonzalez and Brandon McCarthy along with outfielder Ryan Sweeney.

Barton made Oakland’s opening-day roster and started at first base but struggled and was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on June 22. He went on the disabled list July 17 because of a right shoulder injury that required season-ending surgery Aug. 12.

Powell played in 36 games for the A’s while backing up Kurt Suzuki. Rosales began the 2011 season on the 60-day disabled list with a broken right foot and struggled once he came back June 6. He also spent time in Triple-A.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Athletics fired manager Bob Geren on Thursday in the midst of a nine-game losing streak that has sent them tumbling to the bottom of the AL West standings.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Athletics fired manager Bob Geren on Thursday in the midst of a nine-game losing streak that has sent them tumbling to the bottom of the AL West standings.

“It felt like at this point a change was necessary,” general manager Billy Beane said. “It got to the point where the emphasis was on the status of the manager on a daily basis and no longer on the field. When that starts to happen, you need to shift the focus to what’s really important, which is performance. That’s how we came to this decision.”

Former Arizona manager Bob Melvin will take over for the rest of the season as interim manager in the first midseason managerial change for the organization in a quarter century.

Geren’s four-plus season tenure at the helm in Oakland was marked by numerous injuries, a lack of offense and high-profile departures as he was unable to post a winning season after taking over an AL West championship team from Ken Macha. Geren posted a 334-376 record, including a 27-36 mark this season that has left Oakland eight games behind Texas in the AL West. This was the final year of Geren’s contract.

The A’s currently have four starting pitchers on the disabled list, including a season-ending shoulder injury for Dallas Braden. Oakland also was without injured All-Star closer Andrew Bailey for the first two months and is last in the American League with just 223 runs through the first 63 games.

“Bob Melvin will inherit some of the challenges that Bob had,” Beane said. “Bob lost four starting pitchers in the space of three weeks. That was a tough body blow for the team. That was very difficult from Bob’s standpoint. We also have to be realistic here starting out of the gate how we manage around those four guys on the disabled list.”

The beleaguered manager had come under criticism from his bullpen in recent weeks for a lack of communication with reliever Brian Fuentes and former Oakland closer Huston Street publicly criticized him.

But it was the rash of injuries and the total lack of offense that led to the current losing streak that spelled the end of his tenure. The current skid is the longest for the A’s since a 10-gamer in July 2008 and the fifth-longest single-season losing streak since the team moved to Oakland in 1968.

This is the first time the A’s have fired a manager during the season since getting rid of Jackie Moore after 73 games in 1986. Jeff Newman took over for 10 games on an interim basis before Tony La Russa was brought in to start a run that included four division titles and the 1989 World Series championship.

Beane said he started the process of evaluating Geren’s status a few weeks ago before making the ultimate decision.

“Whenever you replace your manager, it’s a drastic move,” Beane said. “I’ve never had to do it in my tenure as general manager. This is a new script for myself. I don’t know if you ever know what the right time is.”

Geren, a longtime friend of Beane, was hired to replace Macha after the 2006 season. The A’s won the division that year and their first playoff series since 1990 before being swept in the AL championship series by Detroit.

Melvin, 49, was to take over the helm for the series opener in Chicago against the White Sox on Thursday night. The Bay Area native posted a 493-508 record in seven seasons as manager with Seattle and Arizona. He led the Diamondbacks to the NL West title in 1997 and also won 93 games in his rookie season with the Mariners in 2003.

“We felt somewhat fortunate that a guy with Bob’s status and credibility was available to us,” Beane said. “When it was all said and done, we felt like now was the time to make a change.”

Melvin was also on Bob Brenly’s staff as bench coach in 2001 when the Diamondbacks won the World Series and the following year when they won the NL West. Melvin also coached for Milwaukee and Detroit.

Melvin played 10 seasons in the majors as a catcher with Detroit, San Francisco, Baltimore, Kansas City, Boston, the Yankees and White Sox. He batted .233 with 35 homers and 212 RBIs in 1,955 career at-bats.

OAKLAND, Calif., June 6 (UPI) — The Oakland Athletics Monday demoted starting third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff to the minor leagues in a roster shake-up.

A’s Manager Bob Geren said the slumping team is looking for better play than what they were getting from Kouzmanoff both in the field and at the plate.

“The production from that spot has not been there offensively and defensively,” Geren told the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News. “Now we’re going to give someone else a chance to produce in that spot.”

Kouzmanoff, once seen as the A’s long-term solution at third, was sent to Class AAA Sacramento while injured infielder Adam Rosales was activated from the disabled list and infielder Scott Sizemore was recalled from Sacramento.

Kouzmanoff, who was obtained by the A’s before last season in a trade that sent Scott Hairston to the San Diego Padres, hit 16 homers and drove in 71 runs over 143 games in 2010, batting ,247.

This season, however, the right-hander is batting .221 with four homers and 17 RBI while committing nine errors at third.

“I’m surprised, I didn’t see it coming,” Kouzmanoff told the newspaper. “But we’ve got Rosales coming up. He’s healthy. That’s just the way it is.”

Sunday morning the Oakland Athletics designated Andy LaRoche for assignment in order to make room for Grant Balfour, who returned from the paternity list. The A’s might have considered sending a pitcher to AAA but the extensive use of the bullpen on Friday and Saturday meant any and all arms needed to be available. The move leaves the A’s with four regular infielders and Conor Jackson as a backup at third base. Although the A’s are a bit short-handed in their infield, they are expecting infielder Adam Rosales back off the disabled list at some point in the next week or so.

Andy LaRoche came into spring training as a non-roster invitee but put together a hot spring and landed a roster spot. Manager Bob Geren played him all around the infield trying to get him at bats. Although LaRoche started off hot, he was unable to sustain his success and at the time of his release he was hitting .247/.320/.333. By designating LaRoche for assignment, the team has ten days to place him on waivers, trade him, or release him. My best guess is the team will place him on waivers and he’ll probably clear waivers, which would likely result in him ending up at Sacramento:

“Obviously there were a lot of things that I could have done better,” he said, “but I was happy with the opportunity to get to play all of the positions. I got a lot more playing time than I was expecting. Now I’ll just see if another team out there needs me.

“I would obviously prefer to be in the big leagues, and if that’s not here, hopefully it’s with another team. If there’s not that need, then I’ll probably be in [Triple-A] Sacramento.”

The move leaves the A’s with outfielder Conor Jackson as their lone backup infielder. Jackson can play third base and regular third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff could move to shortstop or second base if Cliff Pennington or Mark Ellis were ever unavailable.

The A’s will have a backup infielder (and potential starter) when Adam Rosales returns from his rehabilitation assignment in Sacramento. Rosales went on the disabled list last August with a stress fracture in his right ankle. Before going on the DL, Rosales hit .271/.321/.400 in 80 games mixed between all four infield positions and some time in the outfield. He’s in the midst of his third game at Sacramento.
