A’s, Braden Agree to One-Year Deal

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – The Oakland Athletics have agreed to a one-year contract with left-hander Dallas Braden.

The team announced the move Tuesday.

Braden made three starts last season before being sidelined by a
shoulder injury. He was 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA before going on the
disabled list April 18. He had surgery to a repair a torn capsule in his left shoulder May 17.

The 28-year-old Braden is 26-36 with a 4.16 ERA in 94 career appearances during five seasons with Oakland. He pitched a perfect
game against Tampa Bay on May 9, 2010.

The A’s have five players who remain eligible for arbitration: pitchers Andrew Bailey, Joey Devine, Gio Gonzalez and Brandon McCarthy; and outfielder Ryan Sweeney.

OAKLAND (AP) — The Oakland Athletics have agreed to one-year contracts with infielders Daric Barton and Adam Rosales and catcher Landon Powell.

Also on Monday, the A’s tendered contracts to all the unsigned players on their 40-man roster, including six who remain eligible for arbitration — pitchers Andrew Bailey, Dallas Braden, Joey Devine, Gio Gonzalez and Brandon McCarthy along with outfielder Ryan Sweeney.

Barton made Oakland’s opening-day roster and started at first base but struggled and was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on June 22. He went on the disabled list July 17 because of a right shoulder injury that required season-ending surgery Aug. 12.

Powell played in 36 games for the A’s while backing up Kurt Suzuki. Rosales began the 2011 season on the 60-day disabled list with a broken right foot and struggled once he came back June 6. He also spent time in Triple-A.

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland Athletics have traded right-hander Trystan Magnuson to the Toronto Blue Jays for cash.

The A’s also announced Friday they agreed to minor-league deals with right-hander Edgar Gonzalez and infielder Wes Timmons and will invite them to spring training.

Magnuson made his major-league debut with Oakland last season and had no decisions and a 6.14 ERA in nine relief appearances. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list Aug. 18 with right shoulder tendinitis and missed the remainder of the season.

Gonzalez is 14-25 with a 5.90 ERA in 107 career appearances for Arizona, Oakland and Colorado. He pitched mostly in the minors last season.

Timmons batted .341 with eight homers and 62 RBI at Triple-A and Double-A for Oakland last season.

TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays acquired Canadian reliever Trystan Magnuson from the Oakland Athletics on Friday for cash.

The Vancouver native made his major-league debut with Oakland last season and had no decisions and a 6.14 ERA in nine relief appearances. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list Aug. 18 with right shoulder tendinitis and missed the remainder of the season.

The six-foot-seven, 210-pound right-hander was in Toronto’s minor-league system from 2008-’10 before being traded to Oakland last November.

The Jays also announced that Chuck Lamar has been hired as a special assistant to amateur scouting. He spent the last three seasons as assistant general manager of player development and scouting for the Philadelphia Phillies.

Toronto also promoted area scout Rob St. Julien to regional crosschecker and west coast video co-ordinator Brian Johnston to area scout.

The Athletics also agreed to minor-league deals with right-hander Edgar Gonzalez and infielder Wes Timmons and will invite them to spring training.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Athletics say left-handed pitcher Brett Anderson will miss the rest of the season after having reconstructive surgery on his elbow.

The A’s said Anderson had surgery Thursday. Dr. James Andrews performed the operation to rebuild the ulnar collateral ligament.

Anderson was 3-6 with a 4.00 ERA in 13 starts this season. He went on the 15-day disabled list on June 7 because of elbow soreness.

The 23-year-old pitcher originally had a platelet rich plasma injection in his elbow and was going to see whether rehabilitation could help him. After an evaluation period, it was decided that Anderson needed surgery.

Anderson was 7-6 with a 2.80 ERA in 19 starts last year.

No surgery for Athletics’ Braden

Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Dallas Braden(notes) went onto the 15-day disabled list Monday with a stiff shoulder, a 1-1 record, and 3.00 ERA in three starts.

The fact that Braden visited with famed orthopedic surgeon Dr. Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles Wednesday morning was worrisome, but MLB.com reports that the 27-year-old Braden has no structural damage in the shoulder and doesn’t need surgery. Rest and rehab are the cure.

“General manager Billy Beane called the results “positive” and noted that Braden, normally loquacious but recently gloomy since his injury, was in better spirits following the doctor’s visit,” the site reports.

Braden left Saturday’s game after five innings with shoulder stiffness. He is 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA in three starts this season, a year after pitching a perfect game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Harden has been out with a strained right shoulder since spring training. He was originally put on the 15-day DL retroactive to March 22.

The A’s also announced Monday they acquired left-hander David Purcey from Toronto for minor league right-hander Danny Farquhar.

Farquhar was traded from Toronto to Oakland in November.

The Oakland Athletics placed right-handers Rich Harden and Andrew Bailey on the 15-day disabled list to complete their opening day roster Wednesday.
