Big inning costs A’s in 8-3 loss to Tigers

DETROIT (AP)—Guillermo Moscoso’s(notes) worst inning as a starter led to another
loss for the Oakland Athletics.

Moscoso yielded two-run homers by Miguel Cabrera(notes) and Carlos Guillen(notes) during
Detroit’s six-run fifth inning, and Oakland lost 8-3 to the Tigers on Tuesday
night.

“It is kind of frustrating, because we played very good baseball, and I
lost the game in one inning,” Moscoso said. “It was really just three
mistakes, but they did damage on all of them. You can’t leave fastballs up when
you are trying to get out of a jam.”

Moscoso (3-5) hadn’t allowed more than four earned runs in a game this
season, his first as a starter. He allowed six in 4 2-3 innings Tuesday.

The Tigers trailed 3-1 before they grabbed control in the fifth.

After Magglio Ordonez(notes) brought Detroit to within a run with a sacrifice fly,
Cabrera hit his 20th homer of the season, putting the Tigers ahead to stay.
Cabrera’s drive went an estimated 422 feet to left and gave him 600 career
extra-base hits.

Victor Martinez(notes) followed with a double, and Jhonny Peralta’s(notes) RBI single made
it 5-3.

Guillen then hit a two-run shot of his own. It was his first homer since
Aug. 14—shortly before his 2010 season ended because of a left knee injury.
Guillen didn’t return to the lineup until Saturday. He reached base four times
Tuesday.

“It stretches out your lineup any time you get another hitter going in
there,” Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. “Especially a switch hitter like
Carlos and a proven hitter.”

Detroit’s Rick Porcello(notes) (9-6) allowed three runs and eight hits in six
innings.

Brennan Boesch(notes) hit his second double of the game in the sixth, driving in
another run to make it 8-3.

The Tigers might have figured this was their night after Martinez showed
impressive agility while scoring in the fourth inning.

“Great feet, you know,” Cabrera said. “He can play soccer.”

Martinez was on first with two out when Guillen hit a hard grounder that
handcuffed first baseman Conor Jackson(notes) for an error. The ball bounced over into
foul territory down the right-field line, and Martinez tried to come all the way
around.

David DeJesus’(notes) throw was in plenty of time but a bit wide of home to the
first-base side. Suzuki caught it and dove back to tag Martinez, but the runner
wasn’t there yet.

Rather than slide, Martinez sidestepped the plate entirely. When Suzuki,
almost on all fours at the plate, reached out again to make the tag, Martinez
reached back with his left arm and touched home.

“That was a very acrobatic—I guess, to say the least—slide,” Leyland
said. “But he got in there and he was safe. It was a big play for us.”

Oakland manager Bob Melvin came out and argued the safe call to no avail. It
was 1-0 Tigers.

“Martinez started running around, and your instinct is to go after him
instead of making him come to you,” Melvin said. “He went for the tag and
Martinez got his hand in.”

Oakland answered back immediately with three runs in the fifth. Ryan Sweeney(notes)
singled in a run, and Hideki Matsui(notes) hit a two-run single.

Oakland third baseman Scott Sizemore(notes) left in the fourth after being hit on
the left side of his jaw by a pitch. Sizemore was squaring to bunt when he was
beaned. X-rays were negative, and he is day to day.

The A’s had the bases loaded with nobody out after Sizemore was hit, but
they didn’t score. DeJesus grounded into a force play at the plate, and Jackson
hit into a double play.

NOTES: Guillen’s homer was upheld after a review. Replays showed the ball
hit a fan above the wall in right-center. … The Tigers agreed to terms with OF
Tyler Collins, a sixth-round draft pick. … Detroit CF Austin Jackson(notes) (sore
left wrist) played for the first time since the All-Star break. He had two hits
and scored twice. … Boesch had three hits, as did Oakland’s Cliff Pennington(notes).

There is the quick update of the day.

DETROIT (CBS / AP) — Miguel Cabrera and Carlos Guillen each hit a two-run homer in Detroit’s six-run fifth inning, and the Tigers beat the Oakland Athletics 8-3 on Tuesday night.

The Tigers trailed 3-1 before they grabbed control in the fifth against Guillermo Moscoso (3-5).

Detroit’s Rick Porcello (9-6) allowed three runs and eight hits in six innings.
Moscoso (3-5) allowed six earned runs in 4 2-3 innings.

Detroit’s Victor Martinez scored the first run of the game on a wacky play at home, sidestepping Kurt Suzuki’s tag and then reaching back with his arm to touch the plate.

Moscoso hadn’t allowed more than four earned runs in a game all season, but the middle of Detroit’s batting order was more than he could handle in the fifth. Cabrera’s homer went an estimated 422 feet over the left-field fence. Martinez followed with a double, and Jhonny Peralta’s RBI single made it 5-3.

Guillen then hit his first home run since Aug. 14 — shortly before his 2010 season ended because of a left knee injury. Guillen didn’t return to the lineup until Saturday. He reached base four times Tuesday.

A’s designate LHP Jerry Blevins for assignment

(07-19) 15:46 PDT DETROIT, (AP) –

The Oakland Athletics have designated left-hander Jerry Blevins for assignment and recalled right-hander Guillermo Moscoso from Triple-A Sacramento to start against the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night.

Moscoso makes his ninth start of the season. He’s 3-4 with a 2.16 ERA. He was sent to Sacramento on July 7 because the A’s didn’t need a fifth starter for the time being because of the All-Star break.

Blevins was recalled from Sacramento following the first game of a doubleheader Saturday and pitched Sunday. He is 0-0 with a 3.86 ERA in 16 games with the A’s this year.

The A’s said Blevins remains on their 40-man roster.

Athletics vs. Tigers: Josh Willingham Out Of…

Read More: Ryan Sweeney (RF – OAK), Coco Crisp (CF – OAK), Josh Willingham (LF – OAK), Guillermo Moscoso (P – OAK), Los Angeles Angels, Detroit Tigers

The Oakland Athletics will face off with the Detroit Tigers Tuesday afternoon at 4:00pm pacific looking to build on the momentum of their series victory over the Los Angeles Angels. The matchup features Guillermo Moscoso taking on Rick Porcello as the Tigers will look to hang steady behind the AL Central-leading Cleveland Indians.

In an interesting twist, the A’s have sat outfielder Josh Willingham for the series opener, instead going with Ryan Sweeney in left field and placing Coco Crisp in the three spot in the lineup. More than likely this is simply the A’s looking to get some quality matchups given Sweeney’s success against right handed batters. At the same time, it’s an interesting decision if the team is in fact shopping Willingham in advance of the trade deadline. One would think the A’s would want to showcase the outfielder, but there is also the idea of actually trying to win games.

First pitch is scheduled for 4:05pm pacific on CSN California.

Athletics recall Sizemore, activate Rosales, option Kouzmanoff

BALTIMORE — The Oakland Athletics activated infielder Adam Rosales from the 60-day disabled list Monday and recalled infielder Scott Sizemore from Triple-A Sacramento.

Both moves were made before the slumping A’s faced the Baltimore Orioles.

To make room for Rosales and Sizemore, the A’s optioned third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff and right-hander Fautino De Los Santos to Sacramento.

Also Monday, the Athletics sent left-hander Brett Anderson (3-6) back to Oakland to have his arm examined by team orthopedist Will Workman.

Anderson allowed five runs in five innings against Boston on Sunday. In his previous start, he gave up nine earned runs over 5 1/3 innings against the New York Yankees.

Manager Bob Geren wouldn’t discuss specifics about Anderson’s arm, or whether he might miss a start.

“It’s just an all-around good idea to have him checked out. Nothing real specific,” Geren said.

Rosales, who missed all of spring training with a fractured right foot, batted seventh as Oakland’s starting third baseman on Monday night.

“Rosales is a good player, an exciting player,” Geren said. “He brings a lot of energy to the team and plays a lot of different positions.”

Sizemore was acquired from the Detroit Tigers on May 27 for left-hander David Purcey. He hit .222 with 10 walks in 17 games with Detroit.

In nine games with Sacramento, Sizemore hit .267 with 12 walks and 11 runs scored.

Kouzmanoff was hitting .221 with four home runs and 17 RBI in 46 games. He also had nine errors.

“I didn’t see it coming,” Kouzmanoff said. “Obviously, as everybody well knows, I started off slow on both sides of the ball, and I did not play to my potential. All I can do is go down and get my work in and get my reps and try to work my way back.”

Geren said, “Kouzmanoff has had a rough start for us both offensively and defensively and he hasn’t played up to what he can do. He will go down to Triple-A and work on his game.”

De Los Santos joined Oakland on Friday in Boston and made his big league debut Saturday.
