OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland Athletics have agreed to a one-year contract with left-hander Dallas Braden.

The team announced the move Tuesday.

Braden made three starts last season before being sidelined by a shoulder injury. He was 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA before going on the disabled list April 18. He had surgery to a repair a torn capsule in his left shoulder May 17.

The 28-year-old Braden is 26-36 with a 4.16 ERA in 94 career appearances during five seasons with Oakland. He pitched a perfect game against Tampa Bay on May 9, 2010.

The A’s have five players who remain eligible for arbitration: pitchers Andrew Bailey, Joey Devine, Gio Gonzalez and Brandon McCarthy; and outfielder Ryan Sweeney. Full Story

Saunders, Kuo, Scott join ranks of free agents

NEW YORK — Former All-Star pitchers Joe Saunders and Hong-Chih Kuo, and Baltimore outfielder Luke Scott became free agents after their teams declined to offer 2012 contracts.

Atlanta reliever Peter Moylan and St. Louis infielder Ryan Theriot also were among the 30 players set free when their teams failed to offer deals before the midnight EST deadline.

Skip Schumaker was let go in a technicality, then agreed to a $3 million, two-year contract with the Cardinals.

An All-Star for the Los Angeles Angels in 2008, Saunders was 12-13 with a 3.69 ERA last season for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Orioles near deal with lefty Wada

Tsuyoshi Wada is nearing a two-year deal with the Baltimore Orioles, sources have confirmed to CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman.

The news was first reported by Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun.

Wada, 30, is a left-hander who is said to be a soft-tosser cut in the Jamie Moyer mold. He went 17-8 with a 3.14 ERA and 1.81 WHIP in Japan last season. He did strike out 169 batters in 169 1/3 innings, so he must be crafty.

There’s already a logjam of potential starting pitchers for the Orioles. The starting five, as of now, appears to be Jeremy Guthrie, Zach Britton, Jake Arrieta, Chris Tillman and Brian Matusz, but Tommy Hunter could easily figure into the mix.

Braves decline to make offer to Moylan

ATLANTA — The Braves are not offering a contract to right-hander Peter Moylan, who has been one of the team’s top relievers the last six years.

The 31-year-old Moylan has appeared in 80 or more games in three of the last five seasons. He missed most of last season because of back surgery before needing another surgery for a torn rotator cuff and labrum.

Moylan is 19-9 with a 2.60 ERA in his career.

The Braves also declined to offer a contract to utility infielder and pinch-hitter Brooks Conrad. He hit .223 with four homers and 13 RBI last season.

      M’s sign 11 to minor-league deals

SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners have signed 11 players to minor-league contracts with invites to spring training, including infielder Luis Rodriguez and former San Francisco outfielder Darren Ford.

The Mariners announced their first wave of minor-league contracts. Along with Rodriguez and Ford, Seattle signed eight pitchers: Matt Fox, Steve Garrison, Jarrett Grube, Sean Henn, Josh Kinney, Jeff Marquez, Scott Patterson and Phillippe Valiquette. The Mariners also signed catcher Guillermo Quiroz.

Rodriguez played in 44 games at four positions last season for the Mariners. Ford played in 26 games with San Francisco. Garrison, Kinney and Marquez all got limited major league experience as well.

       D-Backs sign righty Albaladejo

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks have signed right-hander Jonathan Albaladejo and added him to their 40-man roster.

Albaladejo pitched in Japan last season after appearing in 10 games for the New York Yankees in 2010.

The 29-year-old right-hander is 6-3 with a 4.15 ERA in four major league seasons with the Yankees and Washington Nationals.

The team announced the move Tuesday.

The Oakland Athletics made a handful of moves on Monday that gives a solid idea as to what the 2012 team is shaping up to look like.

According to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, Oakland has signed first baseman Daric Barton, utility player Adam Rosales and catcher Landon Powell to one-year contracts. Barton has been with A’s since his MLB debut in 2007 and is a career .252 hitter. Rosales came to Oakland in 2010 and has put up a .237/.290/.361 line over two seasons with the club. Powell has been with the Athletics since his MLB debut in 2009 and famously caught Dallas Braden’s perfect game in 2010.

On the arbitration front, Shea also reports that all six of Oakland’s arbitration-eligible players have been tendered contracts. These players are All-Star pitcher Gio Gonzalez, starters Dallas Braden and Brandon McCarthy, relievers Joey Devine and Andrew Bailey and outfielder Ryan Sweeney.

The bulk of Oakland’s pitching staff now appears to be set for next season, although the trade talks surrounding Gonzalez are beginning to heat up.

DALLAS — The Oakland Athletics have a decision to make regarding their outfield.

They’re in rebuilding mode but aren’t convinced that a highly touted, yet unproven, prospect such as Michael Taylor is ready for an everyday job.

So they’re open to signing low-cost free agents, but playing those types of veterans might block Taylor or other prospects from getting a legitimate opportunity.

It’s clear the A’s must acquire some outfield depth because they could lose all three starters from last season to free agency. David DeJesus already is gone, and Josh Willingham and Coco Crisp [stats] could soon be.

How they sort out their final mix of outfielders will be one of their biggest chores come spring training.

“There’s an opportunity for them to prove (themselves),” A’s general manager Billy Beane said of his young outfielders.

Oakland could target outfielders via trade, but as the second day of the winter meetings wrapped up Tuesday, they were not close to completing any deals.

“There’s nothing imminent,” said Beane, who was scheduled to catch a flight out of Dallas on Tuesday night.

The meetings end Thursday.

The A’s have four outfielders on their 40-man roster, and only Ryan Sweeney has more than 28 games of major league experience. Taylor and Jai Miller have combined for 39 games, and Jermaine Mitchell — who might be sidelined at the start of spring training because of knee surgery — has yet to make his big league debut.

As the roster stands, Beane said he envisions Sweeney as his right fielder but is less certain who will play left and center.

Taylor, who will be 26 later this month, is the most puzzling candidate. The A’s raved about his tools upon acquiring him from Toronto in December 2009, but he has hit .272 and averaged 11 homers and 71 RBIs over two seasons with Sacramento, hardly dominant numbers. He made his big league debut in September and hit .200 with one homer in 11 games.

“I think he might be more of a fourth outfielder,” said one scout who has watched Taylor extensively. “I’m not sure they know what they have yet.”

Beane said the A’s won’t rush outfielders Grant Green or Michael Choice, the team’s first-round picks in 2009 and 2010. But manager Bob Melvin spoke highly of Choice and said he thinks it’s possible Choice could taste the majors in 2012.

In trade news, the Boston Red Sox [team stats] and San Diego Padres were among the teams the A’s held discussion with Tuesday regarding closer Andrew Bailey. It’s thought that Boston would part with outfielders Ryan Kalish or Josh Reddick as part of a package for Bailey, but it will likely take higher-profile prospects for the A’s to pull the trigger.

Word is the A’s have talked with Texas and asked for one of the Rangers’ top three prospects — shortstop Jurickson Profar, left-hander Martin Perez or third baseman Mike Olt — whom the Rangers weren’t willing to part with.

“I think we’re definitely going to be open-minded,” Beane said. “We’re going to be somewhat all ears. I don’t think we’ve made a commitment to (trading veterans), but I think we have to be open-minded on anything.”

He wouldn’t confirm whether he’s willing to part with Gonzalez or Bailey, but his refusal to deny it speaks volumes.

With the A’s anticipating word from baseball commissioner Bud Selig on whether they can build a new ballpark in San Jose – speculation is that a decision could come in January – Beane’s plan is to restock with young players, thinking they would be ready to flourish once a new ballpark is opened, whenever that may be.

“That’s the word on the street, that the A’s are going to go young and maybe add to the minor league system as well as add at the major league level – go young and (cost) controllable,” said one major league scout who requested anonymity.

A’s fans are familiar with this storyline.

Following the 2007 season, Oakland dealt All-Star pitcher Dan Haren and fan-favorite first baseman/outfielder Nick Swisher, netting the A’s nine prospects. Trades of veteran pitchers Rich Harden and Joe Blanton followed, bringing more prospects.

Among the players obtained in those trades were Gonzalez, a top-of-the-rotation starter; Ryan Sweeney, a serviceable outfielder; and Fautino De Los Santos, a hard-throwing reliever who projects as a potential closer.

Other prospects obtained have yet to bring a return.

First baseman Chris Carter has a .167 batting average with 41 strikeouts in 39 major league games.

Outfielder Carlos Gonzalez was included in a November 2008 trade with Colorado that brought Matt Holliday to Oakland. Gonzalez has since won a batting title with the Rockies.

The A’s dealt Holliday to St. Louis in July 2009 for a package that included first baseman Brett Wallace, who was eventually flipped for outfielder Michael Taylor.

Taylor, like Carter, has yet to become the impact hitter the A’s envisioned.

The jury remains out on left-hander Brett Anderson – received in the Haren trade – who has made just 62 starts in three seasons because of elbow problems. Anderson is recovering from Tommy John surgery and figures to miss much of 2012.

Pulling the trigger on a deal is one thing. Scoring with the players you get is another.
