OAKLAND (AP) — The Oakland Athletics have agreed to one-year contracts with infielders Daric Barton and Adam Rosales and catcher Landon Powell.
Also on Monday, the A’s tendered contracts to all the unsigned players on their 40-man roster, including six who remain eligible for arbitration — pitchers Andrew Bailey, Dallas Braden, Joey Devine, Gio Gonzalez and Brandon McCarthy along with outfielder Ryan Sweeney. Barton made Oakland’s opening-day roster and started at first base but struggled and was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on June 22. He went on the disabled list July 17 because of a right shoulder injury that required season-ending surgery Aug. 12. Powell played in 36 games for the A’s while backing up Kurt Suzuki. Rosales began the 2011 season on the 60-day disabled list with a broken right foot and struggled once he came back June 6. He also spent time in Triple-A. | Athletics put Anderson, Ellis on DL; call up Weeks
BALTIMORE (AP) — The Oakland Athletics placed left-hander Brett Anderson and second baseman Mark Ellis on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday. Anderson has a sore left elbow and Ellis strained his right hamstring Monday night against Baltimore. With Ellis out, the A’s selected the contract of former top draft choice Jemile Weeks from Triple-A Sacramento. Weeks, the 12th overall pick in the 2008 draft, was poised to make his major league debut Tuesday night against the Orioles as Oakland’s leadoff hitter and second baseman. “I’m not sure what it’s going to be like up here,” Weeks said before batting practice. “Got a little bit of nerves in me right now, but that’s expected. Just hope to be out there and be able to calm down a little bit before the game starts.” Weeks said he expected his mother, father, sister and agent to be in attendance. The make room for Weeks on the 40-man roster, Oakland moved pitcher Dallas Braden from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL. The A’s also recalled left-hander Bobby Cramer from Sacramento. It’s his third stint with Oakland this season. “It’s just part of baseball. It’s a long season,” Cramer said. Anderson is 3-6 with a 4.00 ERA and was coming off successive poor starts against the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. He was sent home to Oakland on Monday and is scheduled to see the team orthopedist this week. Ellis was batting .213 with one homer and 15 RBIs in 58 games. He missed a month last year with an injured left hamstring, but said this injury was not as serious. “This is not even close to being the same thing,” Ellis said, adding that he expected to return after 15 days. | Oakland Athletics Injury Update: Tyson Ross, Brandon McCarthy Placed On DL
Read More: Joey Devine (P – OAK), Fautino De Los Santos (P – OAK), Jerry Blevins (P – OAK), Tyson Ross (P – OAK), Brandon McCarthy (P – OAK), Dallas Braden (P – OAK), San Francisco Giants, Chicago White Sox Until recently the Oakland Athletics had done a good job keeping their players healthy. However, starting with the shoulder injury to Dallas Braden, the injury concerns have quickly reverted back to the norm of the past few seasons. Earlier today the A’s placed starting pitchers Tyson Ross and Brandon McCarthy on the 15-day disabled list. Ross injured his left oblique on Thursday, while McCarthy has had a stress reaction in his right shoulder. The A’s also demoted relief pitcher Trystan Magnuson to AAA after he gave up six runs in two innings against the Twins on Thursday. To replace those three pitchers, the A’s recalled Jerry Blevins, Joey Devine and Fautino De Los Santos from AAA-Sacramento. Blevins had spent the early part of the season in Oakland but was demoted after struggling with control issues. He has struggled a bit at Sacramento, but the A’s need arms after running through much of their bullpen on Thursday. Devine has pitched quite well in Sacramento this year while recovering from Tommy John surgery, but has yet to pitch on back-to-back days. The A’s have a solid bullpen so they won’t necessarily need back-to-back performances from him for now. In 2011 he’s made 11 appearances for Sacramento, throwing 12 1/3 innings and giving up no runs in that time. Throw in a 17 to 1 strikeout to walk ratio and he will be an intriguing presence in the A’s bullpen. However, the most interesting addition was the promotion of Fautino De Los Santos who the A’s acquired from the White Sox in the 2008 Nick Swisher trade. De Los Santos was originally brought over as a starter but was moved to the bullpen at the beginning of 2010. In 13 appearances this year between Midland and Sacramento, De Los Santos has an ERA of 1.76 in 15 1/3 innings with a K/BB ratio of 21/8. This infusion of arms gives the A’s bullpen a bit of a respite. Blevins last pitched on Tuesday, while Devine and De Los Santos last pitched on Monday. However, with Trevor Cahill starting Friday night against the Giants, the A’s are hoping for a limited bullpen need. That’s all for today. Posted in athletics-news | Comments Off

| Athletics’ Braden requires shoulder surgery | |
Recovery time will be determined after doctors repair torn capsuleThe Associated Press Posted:May 11, 2011 3:32 PM ET Last Updated:May 11, 2011 5:47 PM ET Â Oakland Athletics left-hander Dallas Braden needs shoulder surgery. Braden, who pitched a perfect game against Tampa Bay in May 2010, will have surgery Monday in New York to repair a torn capsule in his left shoulder. Oakland made the announcement during its game Wednesday in Texas, and said the recovery time will be determined after the operation by Dr. David Altchek, medical director of the New York Mets. The A’s put Braden on the disabled list April 17, a day after he pitched five scoreless innings at Detroit but left early due to a stiff left shoulder. The decision for surgery came after Braden met this week with specialists in Florida and New York. He was 1-1 with a 3.00 earned-run average this year. The Athletics also Wednesday recalled right-hander Trystan Magnuson from AAA Sacramento and sent left-hander Jerry Blevins outright to that minor league team. Blevins had allowed at least one run in six of his last eight appearances and was tied for second among Americna League relievers with 12 walks. “Magnuson was throwing the ball extremely well down there, great reports, and he’s replacing a guy that was struggling,” manager Bob Geren said. “He’s a big kid who throws hard, is talented and is eager to learn. Geren said injured closer Andrew Bailey, on the DL since spring training with a strained right forearm, will pitch in an extended spring training game Saturday. The right-hander will throw one inning or 20 pitches. That’s all the news for today. Posted in athletics-news | Comments Off
