NEW YORK — Bob Geren has been hired by the New York Mets as bench coach, four months after he was fired as manager of the Oakland Athletics.

Geren replaces Chip Hale, who became Oakland’s bench coach last week.

Sloppy A’s fall to Rangers, 7-1

Colby Lewis and four relievers combined on a five-hitter and the Texas Rangers beat the Oakland Athletics 7-1 on Saturday.

Ian Kinsler had two hits and three RBIs for Texas, which increased its AL West lead to three games over the Los Angeles Angels. Mike Napoli and Elvis Andrus hit run-scoring doubles off A’s starter Trevor Cahill as the Rangers (68-52) moved a season-best 16 games over .500 with their seventh consecutive victory over Oakland.

Jemile Weeks singled, doubled and tripled for Oakland, which committed four errors, had two wild pitches and lost for the seventh time in 11 games.

Suzuki homers for A’s in 4-all tie with Royals

Kurt Suzuki hit a two-run homer and Matt Carson doubled home two runs for the Oakland Athletics in a 4-4 tie with a Kansas City Royals split squad Thursday.

The game was called after nine innings.

Billy Butler, Will Myers and Kurt Mertens drove in runs for the Royals. Chris Getz tripled and singled, stole a base and scored a run.

A’s starter Brett Anderson lasted 3 1-3 innings, allowing two runs and three hits.

Royals starter Will Smith gave up four runs on four hits in two innings.
