OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Free agent center fielder Coco Crisp agreed to a two-year contract to return to the Athletics, filling one key void in the Oakland outfield heading into the 2012 season.

A person with knowledge of the negotiations on Tuesday confirmed Crisp would return to the A’s, a deal worth $14 million first reported by ESPN. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team hadn’t made a formal announcement and details were still being finalized. The contract also includes a club option for 2014.

Crisp, who generated inquiries to varying levels from about half of the major league clubs this winter, had hoped to continue playing on the West Coast. The A’s already lost left fielder and slugger Josh Willingham and right fielder David DeJesus in free agency earlier this offseason, then outfielder Ryan Sweeney was traded to the Boston Red Sox last week along with All-Star closer Andrew Bailey.

Earlier Tuesday, the A’s announced they had traded outfielder Jai Miller to the Baltimore Orioles for cash considerations. Miller was designated for assignment by Oakland on Dec. 23 after the A’s received four players in a trade with Washington that sent starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez to the Nationals.

The 32-year-old Crisp has batted .269 with 16 home runs, 92 RBIs, nine triples and 81 stolen bases in his two seasons with Oakland, which is in rebuilding mode in hopes of being able to relocate to San Jose, construct a new ballpark and become a big spender – though the San Francisco Giants hold the territorial rights to Santa Clara County. As is customary with the low-budget A’s, general manager Billy Beane has unloaded several star players in recent weeks, including starting pitchers Gonzalez and Trevor Cahill, Bailey and fellow reliever Craig Breslow.

Crisp is likely to have newly acquired Josh Reddick playing alongside him. Reddick came to the A’s in the trade with Boston last week.

The 24-year-old Reddick, who began last season at Triple-A Pawtucket before being promoted in late May, batted .280 with seven homers and 28 RBIs in 87 games for the Red Sox in 2011. He can play any outfield spot.

Crisp played his first four seasons with Cleveland three in Boston and one in Kansas City prior to joining the A’s. He appeared in only 75 games during an injury-plagued 2010 season, but made the most of his chances when he was healthy. The A’s exercised their $5.75 million option on Crisp for 2011, when he rebounded to play in 136 games and stole a career-high 49 bases and was caught stealing nine times.

The A’s went 74-88 last season but made strides after Bob Melvin came aboard as manager in June in place of Bob Geren. They haven’t posted a winning record or earned a playoff berth since being swept in the 2006 AL championship series by Detroit.

In 2010, Crisp went on the disabled list in April with a broken pinkie finger and was placed on the DL again in May with a strained ribcage muscle. Crisp broke the pinkie a second time on Sept. 18 and missed the remainder of the season.

On Tuesday, the Baltimore Orioles acquired outfielder Jai Miller from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for cash considerations.

Miller played well for AAA Sacramento as he played in 110 games and hit .276 with 32 home runs and 88 runs batted in. He also hit 24 doubles and stole 16 bases.

Dan Duquette, Baltimore’s VP of Baseball Operations, stated that Miller will compete for a spot on the major league roster come spring time. With Adam Jones set in center and Nick Markakis set in right, it looks like Miller will be competing against Nolan Reimold for left field.

Miller, who will turn 27 in mid January, has spent the last four seasons in AAA compiling a .271 average with 85 home runs and 253 RBI. Miller’s major league experience has been limited, but did hit .250 in 12 at bats last year with Oakland while hitting one home run. While with the Kansas City Royals in 2010, Miller hit .236 with one home run in 55 at bats.

One cause of concern has been his alarmingly high strike out rate. While he did hit those 32 home runs at AAA Sacramento in 2011, he also struck out 179 times in 410 at bats. While getting experience with the Royals in 2010, he struck out 23 times in those 55 major league at bats.

Miller was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the fourth round of the 2003 draft. During his time with the Marlins, he only saw one at bat in the pros, an at bat in which he struck out.

While he does have great speed and base running ability, Baltimore does not need another strike out prone hitter. With Mark Reynolds and Chris Davis already on their team, I can’t see Miller making the roster as a starter, but picking up a player with good speed and some power for cash considerations was not a bad move by Duquette.

Reimold deserves to get his fair shake as the starter in left this year. Last season while in Baltimore, Reimold hit .247 with 13 home runs and 45 RBI in 267 at bats. He also stole seven bases for the O’s.

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland Athletics have agreed to a one-year contract with left-hander Dallas Braden.

The team announced the move Tuesday.

Braden made three starts last season before being sidelined by a shoulder injury. He was 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA before going on the disabled list April 18. He had surgery to a repair a torn capsule in his left shoulder May 17.

The 28-year-old Braden is 26-36 with a 4.16 ERA in 94 career appearances during five seasons with Oakland. He pitched a perfect game against Tampa Bay on May 9, 2010.

The A’s have five players who remain eligible for arbitration: pitchers Andrew Bailey, Joey Devine, Gio Gonzalez and Brandon McCarthy; and outfielder Ryan Sweeney. Full Story

Saunders, Kuo, Scott join ranks of free agents

NEW YORK — Former All-Star pitchers Joe Saunders and Hong-Chih Kuo, and Baltimore outfielder Luke Scott became free agents after their teams declined to offer 2012 contracts.

Atlanta reliever Peter Moylan and St. Louis infielder Ryan Theriot also were among the 30 players set free when their teams failed to offer deals before the midnight EST deadline.

Skip Schumaker was let go in a technicality, then agreed to a $3 million, two-year contract with the Cardinals.

An All-Star for the Los Angeles Angels in 2008, Saunders was 12-13 with a 3.69 ERA last season for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Orioles near deal with lefty Wada

Tsuyoshi Wada is nearing a two-year deal with the Baltimore Orioles, sources have confirmed to CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman.

The news was first reported by Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun.

Wada, 30, is a left-hander who is said to be a soft-tosser cut in the Jamie Moyer mold. He went 17-8 with a 3.14 ERA and 1.81 WHIP in Japan last season. He did strike out 169 batters in 169 1/3 innings, so he must be crafty.

There’s already a logjam of potential starting pitchers for the Orioles. The starting five, as of now, appears to be Jeremy Guthrie, Zach Britton, Jake Arrieta, Chris Tillman and Brian Matusz, but Tommy Hunter could easily figure into the mix.

Braves decline to make offer to Moylan

ATLANTA — The Braves are not offering a contract to right-hander Peter Moylan, who has been one of the team’s top relievers the last six years.

The 31-year-old Moylan has appeared in 80 or more games in three of the last five seasons. He missed most of last season because of back surgery before needing another surgery for a torn rotator cuff and labrum.

Moylan is 19-9 with a 2.60 ERA in his career.

The Braves also declined to offer a contract to utility infielder and pinch-hitter Brooks Conrad. He hit .223 with four homers and 13 RBI last season.

      M’s sign 11 to minor-league deals

SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners have signed 11 players to minor-league contracts with invites to spring training, including infielder Luis Rodriguez and former San Francisco outfielder Darren Ford.

The Mariners announced their first wave of minor-league contracts. Along with Rodriguez and Ford, Seattle signed eight pitchers: Matt Fox, Steve Garrison, Jarrett Grube, Sean Henn, Josh Kinney, Jeff Marquez, Scott Patterson and Phillippe Valiquette. The Mariners also signed catcher Guillermo Quiroz.

Rodriguez played in 44 games at four positions last season for the Mariners. Ford played in 26 games with San Francisco. Garrison, Kinney and Marquez all got limited major league experience as well.

       D-Backs sign righty Albaladejo

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks have signed right-hander Jonathan Albaladejo and added him to their 40-man roster.

Albaladejo pitched in Japan last season after appearing in 10 games for the New York Yankees in 2010.

The 29-year-old right-hander is 6-3 with a 4.15 ERA in four major league seasons with the Yankees and Washington Nationals.

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland Athletics reached agreement on a three-year contract to keep Bob Melvin as their manager, two people with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Melvin is expected to formally receive his new deal in the coming days, both people said, speaking on condition of anonymity to The AP because there had been no announcement by the team.

The 49-year-old Melvin took over in an interim capacity for the fired Bob Geren in June and had a 42-48 record heading into Tuesday night’s series opener with the AL West-leading Texas Rangers at the Coliseum. Geren’s dismissal marked the first time Oakland fired a manager during the season in a quarter century.

Buchholz OK after simulated game.

Boston right-hander Clay Buchholz reported no problems after throwing a 32-pitch simulated game before the Red Sox played the Baltimore Orioles.

Buchholz is hoping to pitch again this season, especially in the playoffs.

“Everything went well,” he said after throwing to the Red Sox’s extra players after a 25-pitch bullpen warm-up session.

Footnotes.

The Diamondbacks announced that team president and chief executive Derrick Hall has prostate cancer. A date for the surgery to remove the prostate hasn’t been scheduled.

• Billy Butler was scratched from the Kansas City Royals’ lineup because of the flu.

OAKLAND, Calif. — Brandon Allen has had a pretty good couple of days since making his AL debut.

						OAKLAND, Calif. —

Brandon Allen has had a pretty good couple of days since making his AL debut. The Oakland Athletics haven’t benefited from them yet.

Allen got three hits for the second straight day but the Athletics failed to hold a lead and fell to the Baltimore Orioles 6-2 on Monday night, their fourth straight loss.

David DeJesus doubled home a run and scored on Cliff Pennington’s single for the A’s, who have dropped four straight.

“It’s part of the game,” Allen said. “We got some good at-bats but their pitcher seemed to bear down when he felt a threat. Unfortunately they got the key hits and we didn’t.”

The Orioles managed only two hits off Oakland left-hander Gio Gonzalez (9-11) through the first six innings before scoring four times in the seventh.

“It was a positive outing,” said Gonzalez, who lost his fifth straight start. “I took a stride forward. My luck is turning a little bit and I just want to stay positive.”

Matt Wieters and Mark Reynolds both homered to help the Orioles begin a 10-game road trip with a victory following a 3-7 homestand.

Robert Andino hit a go-ahead bases-loaded double in the seventh inning and Josh Bell added a two-run single

Adam Jones and Vladimir Guerrero both singled before Gonzalez walked Wieters to load the bases. After a strikeout, Andino greeted reliever Fautino De Los Santos with a deep double over the head of center fielder Coco Crisp to drive in Jones and Guerrero.

Bell, batting only .143 coming into the game, followed with a bouncing single up the middle. Wieters and Andino both scored easily to make it 5-2.

“The seventh inning was a problem,” A’s manager Bob Melvin. “Based on how he pitched leading up to that it looks like Gio is righting the ship.”

It’s only Baltimore’s fourth win in its last 18 games on the road. The Orioles also won for just the second time in 14 games at the Oakland Coliseum since the start of the 2008 season.

Tommy Hunter (2-2) allowed two runs over 6 2-3 innings to earn his first win with Baltimore. The right-hander, who struck out three and walked one, had been winless in two starts since being acquired in a trade from Texas on July 30.

He also got help from the Orioles defense, which turned a double play in the second inning. Wieters also threw out Jemile Weeks trying to steal, the 28th runner the Baltimore catcher has caught this season.

Hunter allowed 10 hits and improved to 5-0 in six career starts against the A’s.

Oakland, outscored 23-8 while getting swept in a three-game series by Texas over the weekend, lost for the sixth time in seven games and fell a season-low 15 games under .500.

Gonzalez gave up four runs and four hits while walking three to raise his majors-leading total to 72.

The A’s strung together four consecutive hits in the bottom of the inning to go in front.

Josh Willingham singled and scored on DeJesus’ double to left center. Allen followed with a base hit before Cliff Pennington’s RBI single gave Oakland a 2-1 lead.

It stayed that way until Baltimore scored four times in the seventh.

Reynolds, who had been in a 1 for 28 slump with 14 strikeouts, homered off Trystan Magnuson in the ninth.

Notes: The A’s set an Oakland record with their 92nd consecutive game with two home runs or fewer. … A’s manager Bob Melvin expects Conor Jackson to be out a few days after the first baseman woke up with a sore neck. … Baltimore IF Chris Davis was not in the starting lineup in order to rest a sore shoulder. … Baltimore 3B Josh Bell underwent a CAT scan on his left side which proved negative. … LHP Brian Matusz (1-4) is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Norfolk to start for Baltimore on Tuesday night. Matusz had a 0.56 ERA in his last two starts in the minors. RHP Guillermo Moscoso (5-6) will go for the Athletics.

TORONTO — Conor Jackson drove in three runs, Hideki Matsui had four hits and the Oakland Athletics beat the Toronto Blue Jays 10-3 on Thursday.

Oakland failed to hit a home run for the first time in nine games but still finished with its most runs since scoring 13 against Tampa Bay on July 27. Oakland’s season-high is 14 runs, set May 17 against the Angels.

Matsui had a 15-game hitting streak snapped Tuesday and was hitless in 10 at bats before hitting an RBI single in the third. He grounded out in the fourth but singled again in the sixth, seventh and ninth to finish 4 for 6. Matsui, who was hitting .209 at the All Star break, has raised his average to .268.

Oakland right-hander Guillermo Moscoso (5-6) allowed two runs, one earned, in six innings to earn the win. He walked two and struck out six.

Fautino De Los Santos and Brian Fuentes each worked one inning before Craig Breslow finished for the A’s.

J.P. Arencibia hit his 19th home run for Toronto, a solo drive to center in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough for the Blue Jays. Full Story

       Padres 3, Mets 2

NEW YORK — Cameron Maybin homered and stole two bases before scoring the tiebreaking run on an error by substitute shortstop Ruben Tejada, rallying the San Diego Padres past the New York Mets for a split of their four-game series.

Heath Bell pitched a perfect ninth and the last-place Padres improved to 5-2 on a 10-game road trip that takes them to Cincinnati this weekend.

Lucas Duda hit a two-run double for the Mets, who finished 3-6 on a disappointing homestand. New York has lost eight of 11 overall.

With the Mets short on available relievers, Jonathon Niese (11-9) matched his career high with 122 pitches.

       Reds 2, Rockies 1

CINCINNATI — Johnny Cueto and two relievers made a pair of first-inning runs stand up and the Cincinnati Reds salvaged a split of their four-game series against the Colorado Rockies.

Cueto, hampered by an upset stomach while pitching a season-low 3 2/3 innings in his last start at Wrigley Field, bounced back to throw three-hit ball for seven shutout innings. He took over the NL ERA lead, lowering his mark from 2.06 to 1.94.

Cueto (8-5) struck out a season-high nine, including Carlos Gonzalez with the bases loaded to end the fifth inning, walked two and hit a batter.

He missed the first month of the season with soreness in his upper right arm, qualified for the ERA lead with this outing.

       White Sox 6, Orioles 3

BALTIMORE — Mark Buehrle pitched eight innings to earn his 10th win, Alexei Ramirez homered in a four-run first inning, and the Chicago White Sox cruised past the Baltimore Orioles.

Juan Pierre had three hits and two RBI for the White Sox, who scored four runs before making an out. Chicago took three of four from the Orioles to complete a 6-1 road trip.

Buehrle (10-5) gave up three runs and six hits, struck out six and walked none. The left-hander has allowed three runs or fewer in 18 straight starts, matching the club record set by Frank Smith in 1909, according to research by the Elias Sports Bureau.

Buehrle’s run of 11 straight seasons with at least 10 wins is a franchise record.
