OAKLAND, Calif.

OAKLAND, Calif. —
Angels 6, Athletics 3

Howie Kendrick homered twice, Erick Aybar scored the go-ahead run on a wild throw home in the seventh inning and the Los Angeles Angels picked up a needed and rare win at the Oakland Coliseum, beating the Athletics 6-3 on Tuesday night.

Maicer Izturis added two hits and an RBI and Aybar also had two hits for the Angels, who snapped a two-game losing streak.

Los Angeles remains three games behind division-leading Texas, which beat Cleveland earlier in the day. The Angels and Rangers finish the regular season with a three-game series in Anaheim.

Aybar, batting .476 over his last six games, singled leading off the seventh and was sacrificed to second. Hank Conger’s hit moved Aybar to third before Izturis hit a grounder to shortstop Cliff Pennington. Aybar broke for home on the play and made it safely when Pennington’s throw was wide of the plate.

Hisanori Takahashi (4-3), the first of four Los Angeles relievers used in the game, pitched 1 2-3 innings for the win while rookie Jordan Walden worked the ninth for his 30th save.

The Angels combined for seven walks but matched their season high of four double plays to limit the damage and win for only the third time in their last 13 games at the Coliseum.

It was also Los Angeles’ sixth victory on the road since Aug. 1.

Kendrick hit a two-run home run in the third off starter Guillermo Moscoso, then added another two-run blast in the ninth.

Josh Willingham doubled and drove in two runs for the A’s, who had won five of six against their AL West rivals before Tuesday’s loss.

The A’s left the bases loaded in the fifth and stranded eight runners overall.

Neither starter was around for the decision.

Oakland’s Guillermo Moscoso carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning of his previous start against Kansas City on Sept. 7 and retired the first six Angels before Aybar’s double in the third.

Peter Bourjos followed with a foul pop-up near the Angels bullpen that first baseman Brandon Allen chased down. Aybar wisely tagged up at second and beat Allen’s throw to third, then scored when the ball skipped past Oakland third baseman Scott Sizemore and Moscoso backing up on the play.

Izturis singled to keep the inning going, and Kendrick capped it with his 17th home run of the season to give the Angels a 3-0 lead.

Angels’ right-hander Jerome Williams had control problems in the bottom of the frame and nearly gave it all back.

A former first-round pick of the San Francisco Giants, Williams gave up an RBI double to Jemile Weeks and a bases-loaded walk to Josh Willingham — one of three free passes he issued in the inning.

Williams continued to struggle, giving up back-to-back walks in the fifth. Josh Willingham then doubled in front of diving right fielder Torii Hunter, scoring Cliff Pennington with the tying run.

Kendrick’s second home run came off reliever Michael Wuertz. The Angels slugger, who has four multi-home run games in his career, has 18 homers this season.

Notes: Oakland CF Coco Crisp had an MRI on his sore right foot and manager Bob Melvin said he expects Crisp play again this season. … Scioscia kept rookie 1B Mark Trumbo out of the lineup because he felt the veteran might be pressing a little. “This is a good time for him to catch his breath and hopefully finish strong,” Scioscia said. “The last 10 at-bats you’re seeing a little tighter grip on the bat. To reach our goal we need him to get back to where he could be. … RHP Jered Weaver, second to Detroit’s Justin Verlander for lowest ERA in the AL, pitches for the Angels on Wednesday. Weaver (16-7) has a three-game losing streak on the road. … RHP Rich Harden (4-2), who last beat Los Angeles more than a year ago, goes for Oakland. … Oakland Raiders defensive lineman Richard Seymour threw out the first pitch.

Torii Hunter and Alberto Callaspo hit back-to-back homers, Ervin Santana allowed one run in six solid innings, and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Oakland Athletics 4-1 Wednesday night for their fourth win in six games.

Reggie Willits’ first hit of the season was a run-scoring double for the Angels, and Peter Bourjos added an RBI single. Los Angeles has won two of three in the four-game series with its upstate AL West rivals.

Read More: Oakland Athletics, Los Angeles Angels

The Oakland Athletics enter the second game of a four game set with the Los Angeles Angels badly in need of a win. The team has lost a season high six straight games and now sits three games out of first and in last place in the AL West. The A’s recalled Guillermo Moscoso from Sacramento to start in place of Tyson Ross and he’ll get to face Dan Haren in his first ever major league start.

The big news Monday night was Brian Fuentes ripping into manager Bob Geren for his use of the A’s closer. Fuentes has felt a lack of communication has led to his being used in situations he was not expecting heading into the season. While Andrew Bailey has worked back from surgery, Fuentes has worked as the closer, but has been called in a variety of situations outside of save situations.

After Monday night’s game, Geren indicated he had been planning on using Grant Balfour in a potential save situation Monday night. Apparently Fuentes did not get the memo on that one, leading to the outburst. Fuentes and Geren supposedly cleared the air, although Fuentes still sounds pretty steamed. It will be interesting to see who Geren goes with if the A’s can get into a save situation. Of course, to do that would require a few runs from the offense.

The Oakland Athletics open up an important four-game series with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Monday night as they look to end their current five-game losing streak. The A’s were swept in a two-game set by the Minnesota Twins, and then swept in a three-game series with the San Francisco Giants. Now they go from the frying pan into the fire as they open this Angels series against Jered Weaver on Monday night and follow that up with a matchup against Dan Haren on Tuesday night. Weaver threw a complete game shutout against the A’s on April 25.

The A’s offense has struggled mightily this season and they’re making a couple changes Monday night to try and inject something into the batting order. Since Kevin Kouzmanoff continues to recover from his groin strain, the A’s have an open spot in the order. They’ll start by moving Conor Jackson in to the third base spot and hit him fifth. Jackson has two plate appearances this season as a third baseman, but they’ve come when he was switched to third late in games. This will be his first start at the position as the A’s look to get some kind of offensive charge from what has been an atrocious corner infield spot.

Andy LaRoche remains in the lineup as well, but he’ll be playing second base as Mark Ellis gets a day off. Ellis seemed to be getting hot last week but he has reverted to his general 2011 form and is hitting .200 at this point. The A’s continue to wait for Adam Rosales to get healthy, and in the meantime they are plugging bodies in wherever they can to get some kind of spark.

Jeff Mathis and Howie Kendrick accounted for the only two Los Angeles hits. Tyler Chatwood (2-2) took the loss in a 2 1/3 inning start. His line included seven runs — five earned — on seven hits and two walks.

The Athletics did not hit a home run in the game, the start of which was delayed 40 minutes by a rain. They led 7-0 after three innings and added six more runs in the sixth inning.

Coco Crisp and Mark Ellis both had three hits for the A’s. Ellis had four RBI in the game.

The Oakland Athletics open up their three game series with the Los Angeles Angels and are hoping their offensive explosion on Saturday and Sunday continues against Angels ace Jered Weaver. The A’s scored 14 runs in the final two games against Seattle and now face a pitcher in Weaver who is pitching as well as anybody in baseball. Weaver is sitting at 5-0 with a 1.23 ERA and 0.76 WHIP. For those keeping count, that puts him on pace for upwards of 36 wins. I don’t think he’ll be winning 36 games, but it’s safe to say he could not be pitching a whole lot better.

The A’s send out Gio Gonzalez who will be looking to bounce back from his first poor performance of the season last Wednesday. He gave up four runs to the Boston Red Sox and suffered his first defeat of the season. He will be facing an Angels lineup that has been around the middle of the pack in terms of offense. Maicer Izturis is leading the way with a line of .338/.384/.500. Howie Kendrick has wielded the big stick thus far with six home runs on the season.

Now the San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that Chavez is getting a workout with the Los Angeles Dodgers on January 20 and has workouts lined up with two American League teamsso he can prove that his beaten-up body is ready to handle another full season of work. Neither of those A.L. teams is his longtime employer, the A’s, the Chronicle reports.

If Chavez signs with the Dodgers, he would presumably platoon with righty third baseman Casey Blake(notes). Chavez has won six Gold Gloves, but his last one came in 2006.
